La Mala

Review by: Jay Miller Wine Advocate: Issue 175, February 2008 Rating: 95 points Drink after 2023 The 2005 La Mala is sourced from a single site on the estate with ungrafted vines of over 160 years of age. It was aged in 50% new French oak for 19 months. Opaque purple, the wine is tight and closed. Aromas of mineral, blackberry, and new oak can be discerned and the fruit is ripe and sweet. However, this blockbuster is in need of 15-20 years of cellaring. In short, this is not a wine for those unable to delay gratification. This is a true vins de garde that will require much patience but in the end, it will be rewarded. Dominio de Atauta was established in 1999 with the first vintage the following year. The vineyards are 100% Tinto Fino, most of them ungrafted vines of 60+ years of age. The estate is biodynamically farmed and all wines are bottled without fining or filtration.
