The K Vintners 2009 Roma En Chamberlin represents a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon with 38% Syrah sourced from Christophe Baron’s famous vineyard and named for Charles Smith’s mother. Dark Burley tobacco, dried mushrooms, peat, smoked meat and saline, alkaline marine notes dominate the intriguing nose, though cassis and mulberry are also present, and go on to juicy abundance on the palate. The bit of toasted oak that’s recognizable here insinuates its way unproblematically into the rich tapestry of flavor. Here’s yet another instance in the present collection of vibrancy, brightness and striking minerality characterizing a wine to what, in view of its sheer mass and richness, is a remarkable degree. I would look for at least a decade’s rewards.
