Drink now - 2020

The 1994 Rioja Grandes Anadas Reserva Especial (made from a single Tempranillo vineyard planted 80-100 years ago) was aged for 40 months in 100% new French oak casks. Approximately 100 six-bottle cases were imported to the United States. This intellectually and hedonistically satisfying wine is one of the most compelling and prodigious Riojas I have ever tasted. It possesses amazing richness, and a fabulous smoky, black fruit-scented nose that soars from the glass. Full-bodied, with extraordinary richness, layers of fruit, beautifully integrated acidity, tannin, and wood, and a whoppingly long 45+ second finish, this wine must be tasted to be believed. It is also one of the most expensive Riojas I have ever tasted, but this wine has a 20-year upside potential. It is a tour de force in winemaking. Kudos to Artadi! Anticipated maturity: 2000-2020.

The 2005 Pagos Viejos is already in bottle but has not been released. It is just slightly more muted but lovely nonetheless. Already complex both aromatically and on the palate, it has superb materials while appearing to be more structured than the 2004. Purchasers will need to be a bit more patient with this 2005 and should consider drinking the 2005 Vinas de Gain in the interim. Kudos to Bodegas Artadi for this tour de force!

El Pison is a 100% Tempranillo cuvee produced from a single vineyard planted in 1945. The soil is pure limestone, yields are a lowly 18-22 hectoliters per hectare, and the wine is aged for 18-24 months in French oak. The 1999 El Pison reveals Burgundy-like aromas, intense flavors, a surreal lightness, and considerable finesse. It should drink well for a decade.

A single vineyard 100% Grenache from 80-year old vines planted in pure chalk at an elevation of 750 meters, this estate is the creation of Juan-Carlos Lopez de la Cal, who learned his craft at Artadi. It is a fabulously concentrated, complex, medium-bodied Spanish red that tastes like a grand cru from the Cote de Nuits. The combination of limestone soil and Grenache grown at a high elevation appears to have given the wine a complex, elegant, raspberry, black cherry, and floral-scented nose with medium body, great fruit, tremendously vivid flavors, and amazing precision as well as finesse. This stunningly singular wine must be tasted to be believed. Remarkably airy and light for its intense flavors, it will provide immense pleasure over the next 5-6 years.

What Romeo has achieved in the challenging 2002 vintage is impressive. The very limited production 2002 Contador (100% old vine Tempranillo) reveals great purity and texture as well as that nobility and stature found in all of the world's most profound wines. I'll keep my tasting notes short as there are fewer than twenty cases for the USA market. It possesses fabulous richness, full body, sweet tannin, and 10-16 years of longevity. It can be drunk now or cellared. The prices for these wonderful curiosities reflect their rarity as well as the high quality winemaking.

Due to the extremely limited availability of Contador 2002, this wine is sold in a package as follows:

What Romeo has achieved in the challenging 2002 vintage is impressive. The least expensive offering here is the 2002 La Cueva del Contador, a 100% Tempranillo bottled unfiltered after spending time in French oak. Dense ruby/purple-hued, with a fragrant bouquet of roasted espresso, melted chocolate, scorched earth, and dense black currant and cherry fruit, it is reminiscent of some of the great efforts from Peter Sisseck's Pingus. Opulent and full-bodied with an unctuous texture, sweet tannin, and low acidity, this beauty is clearly made in the more modern style of Rioja winemaking. It should drink well for 10-12 years. The prices for these wonderful curiosities reflect their rarity as well as the high quality winemaking.

What Romeo has achieved in the challenging 2002 vintage is impressive. A new cuvee, the 2002 La Vina de Andres Romeo, is a limited production effort dedicated to Benjamin Romeo's father. I found it somewhat monolithic, although it possesses loads of potential. A dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by a sweet bouquet of smoked herbs, licorice, cigar smoke, black currants, and figs. Opulent and loaded, but foursquare and angular, it was not singing the day I tasted it. The prices for these wonderful curiosities reflect their rarity as well as the high quality winemaking.

Produced from yields of one ton of fruit per acre from 70-100 year old Tinto de Toro (the local name for Tempranillo) vines, it enjoyed an extended 28-day maceration as well as 19 months in new French oak before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. A strong effort for the vintage, this deep ruby/purple-tinged 2002 exhibits scents of pain grille intermixed with raspberries, black cherries, and hints of licorice as well as spice box. The 2003 Numanthia was fashioned from yields of one ton of fruit per acre (from a clone of Tempranillo that often has the highest polyphenols of any Tempranillo clone). This cuvee is made from 70- to 100-year-old vines planted at a 2,300 foot elevation, which no doubt accounts for the freshness in this massively rich, intense red. A vivid, intense nose of espresso roast, pain grille, sweet black cherries, and creme de cassis is followed by a full-bodied, intensely-concentrated, rich, well-delineated, moderately structured, pure red that can be drunk young or cellared for a decade.

Toro on steroids, the 2002 Termanthia emerges from a high altitude (2,625 feet), old vine Tempranillo vineyard that produced only one half ton of fruit per acre. Sadly, there are less than 125 cases produced. Its deep saturated ruby/purple color is followed by a sweet nose of smoke, melted licorice, white chocolate, creme de cassis, and kirsch liqueur. The 2004 Pesus comes from a small parcel of 82-year-old Tempranillo with small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Yields were a microscopic 7-9 hectoliters per hectare. After fermentation in a special stainless steel tank, the wine was transferred into new French oak. It was racked further into new oak three times and aged for a total of 24 months in the oak. This 100-case cuvee is surely one of Spain's greatest wines.
This truly is the stuff of legends. The colour sucked me in like a black hole. This was tasted in a line-up to amazing to describe (but considering that one of my least favourites out of this 34 bottles line-up was 2000 Lafite-Rothschild will give you an idea), and this was one of the toppers. Tasted blind, many among the tasters were going for Harlan. On the nose I was almost overpowered by a bouquet of licorice, lead pencil, espresso beans, leather, cedar, black currant, kirsch and violets. In the mouth, this wine exploded like the Deathstar in Star Wars: A new Hope, and filled my palate with shockwaves fruit, chocolate, spice and supple tannins. Pure, perfectly balanced and immensly concentrated, POW.

Opulent and full-bodied, with high levels of tannin, and wonderful sweetness as well as definition, it is a tour de force in winemaking. Anticipated maturity: now-2017.

Jose Pariente's 2007 Sauvignon Blanc is standard quality with no special attributes. In contrast, the 2007 Varietal Verdejo is a superb expression of this once under-rated grape variety. The fruit was sourced from a 40 year old, 6-hectare estate vineyard. Medium straw-colored, the wine has an alluring fragrance of mineral, lemon-lime, citrus, and floral notes. Ripe with serious depth, this intensely flavored, smooth-textured effort can be enjoyed over the next 1-2 years.

The Valbuena offering is a brilliant introduction to the winery. The 2001 is especially good because all of the wine normally reserved for Unico went into this bottling. It has a similar personality to the 2002 but with more of everything as if it has been on an extended workout regimen. Youthful in appearance and with classic aromatics, it has the extract and the structure to blossom for 6-8 years and drink well for another 20.

The Reserva Especial is a blend of the best barrels of 1990, 1991, and 1996 (for the record, the Reserva Especial reviewed in Issue #169 is a blend of 1985, 1991, and 1996). Purple-colored, it delivers an ethereal perfume of smoke, mineral, scorched earth, Asian spices, black currant, and blackberry. Elegant yet remarkably powerful, this rich, lavish effort seems to linger on the palate for well over one minute. Although it can certainly be enjoyed now, it has the structure to evolve for another decade and should provide pleasure through 2045.

This unfined, unfiltered offering, from steep vineyards (60-100-years old) composed primarily of schist, is 100% Mencia, a varietal indigenous to Bierzo. It is fashioned by the brilliant Spanish winemaker, Alvaro Palacios, from tiny yields of 25 hectoliters per hectare. According to Alvaro Palacios, the estate's finest (as well as steepest) vineyard is Corullon. The brilliant 2003 Corullon may be the finest wine of the appellation. Its dense purple color is accompanied by lovely aromas of precise blueberries, cassis, crushed rocks, and acacia flowers. Fuller-bodied and richer, with more structure and tannin, this classic Spanish red will benefit from another 1-2 years of bottle age; it should drink well for a decade.

The 2005 La Mala is sourced from a single site on the estate with ungrafted vines of over 160 years of age. It was aged in 50% new French oak for 19 months. Opaque purple, the wine is tight and closed. Aromas of mineral, blackberry, and new oak can be discerned and the fruit is ripe and sweet. An explosively rich, intense Spanish red made from 40-year old Tempranillo vines cropped at a measly 15 hectoliters per hectare, this superb 2003 reveals a style reminiscent of the famed Ribera del Duero, Pingus. Deep ruby/purple to the rim, with a smoky bouquet of roasted espresso, blackberry, crème de cassis, and sweet oak aromas, this opulently textured, full-bodied Toro is terrific. Its low acidity and lavish richness suggest it should be consumed over the next 5-8 years. Sadly, at this time there is no American importer for this wine, although Bernard Magrez's international connections should ensure that these cuvees end up in the better restaurants and wine shops of not only France, but Western Europe. Hopefully, an innovative American importer will see fit to give American consumers access to these intriguing efforts. This wine will appear under the name Gerard Depardieu. Quantities for his wines range from 400-600 cases, and the debut vintage (2002) will hit the marketplace in fall, 2004.

This is the first release from a partnership between Michel and Dany Rolland of Libourne, and the well-known family of Jacques and Francois Lurton of Graves (the name is Spanish for Champs Elysees). It is a 1,000-case cuvee of old vine Tinto de Toro aged in 100% new French oak for 16 months prior to being bottled unfiltered.

Power to spare. This inky, thick-textured red carries an enormous load of toasty oak and ripe black fruit, yet remains balanced, even graceful on the palate. Coffee and chocolate notes from oak dominate now, but there's plenty of stuffing to age. Like a bodybuilder: not quite natural, but impressive. Tinta de Toro. New joint venture between Michel Rolland and J. & F. Lurton. Best after 2005. 750 cases made.

Product SKU: 727970
Review by: Jay Miller
Wine Advocate: Issue 169, February 2007
Rating: 91 points

The 2005 Victoria is produced from a higher altitude vineyard. It is made in the same manner but in this case the residual sugar is 225 g/l. There is a mineral element with fresher fruit and livelier acidity than its sibling. The flavors are an attractive amalgam of pineapple, mango, and kiwi. Both wines would make for an excellent aperitif or an accompaniment to fruit desserts.

The 2005 Old Vines is a selection of the best 80- to 100-year-old vineyards. It was fermented in new French oak and contains 250 g/l of residual sugar. Green gold in color, it has a superb bouquet of mineral, lime, slate, spring flowers, and tropical aromas. Sweet, viscous, and concentrated, with excellent focus and length, this is an unctuous, lengthy dessert wine with which to finish a meal.

Drink now - 2020

The outrageously delicious 2001 Costers de Mas Igneus Old Vines is fashioned from the winery's six oldest parcels (planted between 1901-1920). A blend of 65% Grenache and 35% Carignan aged one year in new French oak, it is bottled without fining or filtering. It boasts an opaque purple color as well as a beautiful perfume of black raspberry liqueur, cassis, minerals, kirsch, and flowers, superb purity, a lush, layered texture, and a tremendously persistent finish that lasts for 40+ seconds. Moderately high tannin in the finish suggests aging of 3-5 years will bring even more attention to this impressively endowed wine. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2020. This is an outstanding value.

This is almost too easy to like. Lush blueberry jam and piecrust notes are rich and sweet, enrobed in a plush texture and lingering sweetly on the vanilla-scented finish. It may not satisfy the traditionalists, but the pleasure is hard to deny. Drink now through 2009. 310 cases made.

Drink 2009 - 2022

The 2004 Clos Martinet is not as dense as its older sibling but it offers more aromatic complexity (a characteristic of 2004 in the Catalan region) and cuts a broader swath across the palate. It is a rich, plushly textured, full-flavored wine that merits 2-4 years of additional bottle age after which it should drink well for at least 15 years.

The superb 1982 Gran Reserva Seleccion is from a great Rioja vintage. The wine was aged for nearly four years in French barriques and bottled in 1987. It exhibits a deep red-brick color and a sexy nose of earthy minerals, smoky tobacco, spice box, cherry, and red currants. This is followed by a nicely structured wine with elegance and a certain stateliness marking it is a classic example of old-style Rioja. This splendid effort should drink well for another decade.

The 2007 Urban Ribera is a strong candidate for the best new release Ribera del Duero under $25. Made from 100% Tinta del Pais (Tempranillo), the wine spent four months in French oak. Purple-colored, it offers up a fragrant bouquet of scorched earth, violets, and black cherry that leaps from the glass. Smooth-textured and suave on the palate, it has loads of succulent black fruit, silky tannins, excellent depth and grip, and a juicy finish. Drink this tasty effort over the next four years.

SIERRA CANTABRIA AMANCIO, 2002 750ML

Product SKU: 720354
Review by: Jay Miller
Wine Advocate: Issue 169, February 2007
Rating: 92 points

The 2002 Amancio is sourced from a single 37-acre Tempranillo vineyard. It received malolactic fermentation in new French oak followed by the "200% new oak" treatment (popularized by Dominique Laurent in Burgundy) over a 24 month period. Opaque purple-colored, with lots of toast (but not an excessive amount) in the nose as well as spice box, blueberry, and blackberry, the wine offers good flavors in its medium to full-bodied personality. Forward and internationally styled, it could use a bit more depth and concentration but it is nevertheless a fine effort from a difficult vintage.
