Dark red in the glass, its legs cascade slowly due to its concentration and power. Possessing aromas of licorice, dark fruits and vanilla, this theme carries through on the palate with loads of rich, wild fruit all wrapped in chalky, ripe tannins persistence and structure to support the concentration of flavour. A wine that boldly showcases the beauty of blending two varieties that match like hand and glove - delivering a memorable wine with loads of personality.

3 RINGS RESERVE SHIRAZ, 2004 750ML

Product SKU: 729770
The 2004 Shiraz Reserve was sourced from 40- and 100-year-old vines yielding a meager 0.5 tons per acre. It was aged 30 months in 600-litre demi-muids. Purple/black in color, it exhibits a splendid, brooding perfume of cedar, scorched earth, licorice, blueberry compote, and blackberry liqueur. This is followed by a thick, rich, voluptuous Shiraz with all components totally integrated and harmonious. The finish is exceptionally long and pure. It will evolve for a decade and drink well through 2030.

Drink 2015 -2025+

The 2005 1860 Vines is just magic. Deep garnet in color, it displays intense aromas of blackberry, smoky bacon, earth, cumin and allspice with touch of roasted nut. The medium to full-bodied palate is seriously savory with iron ore, game and truffle nuances countered by crisp acid and a medium-high level of very finely grained tannins. The finish is very long and complex. Drink it from 2015 to 2025+.

Drink now - 2015

Clarendon Hills' flagship Grenache, the 2003 Grenache Old Vines Romas Vineyard is the densest, most exotic of these wines. Produced from a parcel of vines (65-80-years old) in the highest section of the Blewitt Springs Vineyard, it boasts a dense ruby/plum color, a raspberry and blackberry-scented perfume with hints of underbrush, incense, and camphor, an unctuously textured mouthfeel, marvelous elegance, and an incredibly intoxicating personality. Rich and dense, it will benefit from 1-3 years of bottle age, and should last for 12-15 years. Roman Bratasiuk is one of Planet Earth's greatest winemakers, and obviously a top-notch viticulturist given his obsession with sourcing extraordinary fruit from ancient McLaren Vale vineyards.

Drink 2009 - 2035

Elderton's flagship is the single vineyard Command Shiraz, a wine with serious aging potential, and one with which all other South Australia Shiraz must be compared. The opaque purple/black 2005 Command Shiraz was aged in French and American oak puncheons (500-liter barrels). It offers up a sexy/kinky bouquet of wood smoke, lavender, leather, game, mineral, black raspberry, and blueberry pie. Voluptuous on the palate, complex, and dense, it demands a decade of cellaring after which it should offer hedonists much pleasure through 2035.

The 2008 Marquis Philips Shiraz Integrity (the first since 2003) is also a behemoth at 17.8% alcohol. Black in color, it offers up a superb nose of Asian spices, incense, bacon, lavender, blackberry, and blueberry. Full-bodied, voluptuous, packed and stacked are but a few adjectives that come to mind. On the palate it is dry, rich, long, and pleasure-bent, but there is a bit of heat in the finish. Drink it over the next 8-10 years.

With veteran vigneron Chris Ringland now in charge of the winemaking, I can state unequivocally that this is the finest collection of Marquis Philips wines since the label was started in 2000. Nevertheless, these wines will be controversial because all but one of the non-Roogle wines is over 16% alcohol. The small but vocal crowd of Australia bashers will have a field day taking these wines to task as they do with the Mollydooker wines (which seem to sell out anyway). Ringland is concerned about flavor and balance which is what these wines are all about. Those seeking low alcohol, subtlety, and finesse should of course look elsewhere. Those who want a big mouthful of sensual pleasure should read on. The Roogle Series is meant to be a bargain-priced introduction to the Marquis Philips upper level wines. The Marquis Philips wines are predominantly sourced from McLaren Vale while the Roogle wines are multi-regional

Wine Advocate: Issue 167, October 2006
Rating: 96 points
Drink now - 2021

Kalleske's top wine is the 150-case cuvee of Shiraz Johann Georg Old Vine from a 129-year-old vineyard. Named after the first Kalleske, a native of Silesia who immigrated to Australia in 1838, it offers just about everything one could want in a Barossa Valley Shiraz. Aged two years in new French and American 300 liter hogsheads, and produced from yields of one ton of fruit per acre, this cuvee is extraordinarily consistent in 2004 and 2005. In fact, it's hard to choose a favorite. This wine exhibits great intensity, an inky/purple color, and notes of creosote, camphor, blackberries, cassis, and subtle vanillin/pain grille notes. Unbelievably unctuous and full-bodied, with stunning concentration, thrilling purity, and amazing length as well as richness, it should evolve gracefully for 15+ years.

Review by: Robert Parker
Wine Advocate: Issue 167, October 2006
Rating: 98 points
Drink now - 2026

A new offering, the 2004 Shiraz Attunga 1865 comes from a Clare Valley vineyard planted in 1865. According to Kevin Mitchell, it is the oldest commercially active vineyard still producing in the Clare Valley. Aged 25 months in 100% new French hogsheads, this is a single vineyard cuvee of extraordinary elegance (rather than power). It is amazing to see how this old vine Shiraz fruit has resulted in a wine that is very linear, deep purple-colored, with notes of creosote, blueberries, crushed rocks, and acacia flowers. While it possesses extraordinary richness, what the taster gets is a sense of definition, elegance, finesse, and tremendous intensity. It appears to be seamlessly constructed, but I suspect more tannin will emerge once it has had some time in a cold cellar. It will be fascinating to follow this wine's evolution over the next two decades.

MT BILLY ANTIQUITY SHIRAZ, 2004 750ML

Review by: Robert Parker
Wine Advocate: Issue 173, October 2007
Rating: 92 points
Drink 2013 - 2025

The 2004 Antiquity Shiraz was sourced from Shiraz vines ranging in age from 80-110 years of age. It was aged for 27 months in French hogsheads and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Opaque purple-colored, it delivers an enticing perfume of toasty oak, violets, fennel, plum, blueberry compote and blackberry liqueur. This leads to a full-flavored Shiraz in which notes of crushed stone, licorice, and chocolate make an appearance. The wine is mouth-coating, opulent, and altogether hedonistic. It has enough stuffing to evolve for 6-8 years and will continue to provide pleasure through 2025.

Pannell appears to have a special touch with Grenache, and his 2004 (fashioned from non-irrigated, 60+-year-old bush vines, and tiny yields of 1.5 tons of fruit per acre) was aged 14 months in 5-year-old French 300 liter barrels. It possesses superb purity in addition to an old style Rayas-like bouquet of black raspberries, kirsch, licorice, earth, and spice. Full-bodied, rich, and dry with substantial flavor intensity supported by a solid, tannic backbone, it should improve over the next 2-4 years, and last for a decade.

Drink 2017 - 2030

The 2003 Shiraz Moorooroo Limited Release is sourced from a vineyard planted in 1847, the wine offers up a complex array of cedar, spice box, scorched earth, tar, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur. This is followed by a full-bodied yet elegant Shiraz with an opulent palate-feel, gobs of spicy blue and black fruits, superb depth and concentration, and a 60-second finish. Splendidly balanced with well-concealed tannins, this seamless wine merits 10-12 years of cellaring after which it can be enjoyed through 2030.

The family owned Schild Estate dates back to the early 1950s. Their vineyard holdings now encompass 380 acres. The first Schild Estate wines were produced in 1998.

Wine Advocate: Issue 167, October 2006

Drink now - 2014

The dense, chewy, rich, deeply-colored 2005 Shiraz is a full-bodied, ripe, intense wine, but does not reveal quite the same thrilling level of quality as the Cabernet. Nevertheless, it is no wimpy wine, boasting 16% alcohol as well as stunning richness and length. Drink it over the next 7-8 years. Owners Paul and Lynn Shirvington have replaced winemakers Sarah and Sparky Marquis with Kim Johnston, who appears to be following in the same footsteps, producing bigger than life, bold, rich, but beautifully linear and precise wines. Both of these cuvees are barrel-fermented and aged in 75-85% new oak, primarily American. The vines are young, which makes the quality even more remarkable.

The Ball Buster blend has been an annual Best Buy and, even at the current asking price, the 2007 The Ball Buster is an awesome value (at least for hedonists). It is composed of 72% Shiraz, 17% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 11% Merlot aged for 12 months in seasoned French and American oak. Opaque purple-colored, it has a nose of cedar, leather, spice box, and blueberry that leaps from the glass. This is followed by a plush, full-bodied wine with gobs of flavor and superior length. Drink 2017 - 2030

The 2005 Descendant is composed of 92% Shiraz and 8% Viognier which are co-fermented. The fruit is sourced from a relatively young vineyard in Marananga planted with 11-year-old cuttings from the Run Rig vineyards and aged for 18 months in 2.5-year-old French barrels previously used for Run Rig. Opaque purple, with glass-coating glycerin, it offers up a complex array of lavender, violets, blueberry, blackberry, and fresh road tar. Full-bodied, on the palate the wine has great concentration with a noticeable uplift from the Viognier, gobs of spicy black fruits, opulence, and well-concealed tannins which will carry this wine for 10-15 years of further evolution. Drink it through 2030. Torbreck, under the leadership of owner/winemaker David Powell, remains a Barossa Valley benchmark as well as one of the world's greatest wine estates. The top cuvees are limited production and expensive but there are also some outstanding values in the portfolio.

The 2003 Les Amis is a 300-case cuvee of 100% Grenache from a vineyard planted in 1901. I have had a lot of fun serving the 2002 blind to guests, and for my taste, this cuvee is the reference point for old vine Grenache produced in Australia. It is extraordinarily elegant for a wine of such power, richness, and intensity. Amazingly delineated, with a dense ruby/purple color as well as a gorgeously sweet nose of smoke, spice box, black cherry liqueur, creme de cassis, licorice, and lavender, it offers impressive balance, purity, opulence, and persistence. This phenomenal wine is both powerful and refreshingly elegant. A magnificent achievement for Torbreck, it should drink well for 15+ years.
David Powell, unquestionably one of the world's finest wine producers, has an uncanny ability to discover old vine Barossa vineyards, and then secure long term contracts for their fruit. It is amazing that such high quality sources have not already been plucked by Australia's giant wine corporations. Torbreck's wines continue to get better and better, combining the old vine ripe fruit of Barossa with a European sensitivity to elegance and balance. The finest wines in this portfolio are pricy, but David Powell delivers some remarkable reds and whites at prices that are more than fair for the quality in the bottle.

TORBRECK THE FACTOR, 2004 6000

Product SKU: 727023
Review by: Robert Parker
Wine Advocate: Issue 167, October 2006
Rating: 97 points
Drink now - 2026

Made from 100% Shiraz that spent 24 months in French oak (30% new), the exuberant, flamboyant 2004 The Factor offers up gorgeously pure blueberry and blackberry fruit intermixed with smoke, bacon fat, camphor, and graphite. Silky smooth, and, as David Powell says, 'the most Barossa-like' of all his wines, it represents Powell's rendition of a Cote Rotie. It can be drunk over the next 15-20 years.

TORBRECK THE FACTOR, 2005 750ML

Product SKU: 70574605
Review by: Jay Miller
Wine Advocate: Issue 173, October 2007
Rating: 97 points

The 2005 The Factor is 100% Shiraz sourced from dry grown vines from six sub-regions of Barossa. It spent 24 months in 30% new French oak. Opaque purple-colored, it delivers an expressive bouquet of pepper, smoke, espresso roast, blackberry, blueberry, and licorice. Full-bodied and voluptuous on the palate, nuances of saddle leather and mineral emerge to complement the layers of spicy blue and black fruits. The wine is beautifully integrated with enough well-concealed tannin to keep this wine evolving for a decade. The pure finish lingers for 60+ seconds to complete the experience of a totally hedonistic turn-on. Torbreck, under the leadership of owner/winemaker David Powell, remains a Barossa Valley benchmark as well as one of the world's greatest wine estates. The top cuvees are limited production and expensive but there are also some outstanding values in the portfolio.

TORBRECK THE PICT, 2005 750ML

Product SKU: 724753
Review by: Jay Miller
Wine Advocate: Issue 173, October 2007
Rating: 92 points
Drink now - 2022

The 2005 The Pict is a limited production cuvee made from 100% Mataro. Purple-colored, it offers a complex perfume of forest floor, black truffle, blueberry, and blackberry liqueur. This leads to a full-bodied, layered wine which is well-extracted, structured, somewhat straightforward, and just a bit compact on the palate. It could well last for 10-15 years but I would opt for drinking it younger while the fruit holds. Torbreck, under the leadership of owner/winemaker David Powell, remains a Barossa Valley benchmark as well as one of the world's greatest wine estates. The top cuvees are limited production and expensive but there are also some outstanding values in the portfolio.

TORBRECK THE STEADING, 2003 1500ML

Product SKU: 720058
Review by: Robert Parker
Wine Advocate: Issue 161, October 2005
Rating: 93 points
Drink now - 2012

Reminiscent of a Rhone Valley Chateauneuf du Pape, the 2003 The Steading is an intriguing, complex blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, and 20% Shiraz. Aromas of garrigue, Provencal herbs, pepper, black cherries, raspberries, and currants are followed by a medium to full-bodied red possessing great fruit, surprising elegance, and loads of complexity. It will provide plenty of pleasure over the next 5-7 years.

TORBRECK THE STRUIE, 2004 1500ML

Product SKU: 718871
Review by: Robert Parker
Wine Advocate: Issue 167, October 2006
Rating: 96 points
Drink now - 2026

The 2004 The Struie is 100% Shiraz from 40-60-year old and 120-year old vineyards. Half of the fruit is from the Eden Valley and half from the Barossa, and the wine spends 18 months in French oak (20% new). An exotic bouquet of blackberries and other sweet fruits is followed by a full-bodied, powerful, rich red with great purity as well as focus, a laser-like precision, huge intensity, and a blockbuster finish that lasts nearly a minute. It will be even better with 2-3 more years of bottle age, and should last for two decades.

WIRRA WIRRA SCRUBBY RISE, 750ML

Product SKU: 19935
At Wirra Wirra things are not always what they seem, like our twist on an Australian classic - shiraz and cabernet sauvignon - with a splash of petit verdot. Two beauties and an ugly duckling? It's well known that Shiraz and Cabernet make great bedfellows, but in a rare case of "three's company", the Bordeaux blender Petit Verdot takes this wine to another level, with its vibrant colour and rich fragrance. All three varietals conspire to achieve the balance, elegance and structure of this classic Wirra Wirra red, complemented by 12 months in American and French oak.

Is it any wonder this wine has slipped into the vernacular as "Scrubby White"? While the name may twist tongues, this unusual mix offers a rich array of fruit flavours to inspire the most jaded palate. Crisp and fresh, less than 10% of the blend spent time in new French barriques. It completes the puzzle and gives you something to ponder while you wrestle with Sauvignon Blanc Semillon Viognier.

YARRA YERING DRY RED WINE N° 1, 2001 750ML

Product SKU: 706206
Review by: Robert Parker
Wine Advocate: Issue 155, October 2004
Rating: 88 points
Drink now - 2019

The 2001 Dry Red Number 1 (a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot) reveals a dense ruby/purple-tinged color along with a firm nose of black fruits, damp earth, and dried herbs, sweet, intense, pure red and black fruit flavors, austere tannin, and a medium to full-bodied, deep palate. Everything is there, but the wine requires 2-3 years of cellaring to strut its full character. It should keep for 12-15 years.

YARRA YERING DRY RED WINE N°2, 2002 750ML

Product SKU: 720869
Review by: Robert Parker
Wine Advocate: Issue 161, October 2005
Rating: 89 points
Drink now - 2011

Continuing this winery pattern of irregularity, the 2002 Dry Red Wine No. 2, while excellent, is much more attenuated, and somewhat emaciated when compared to its blockbuster younger sibling. It possesses a dark ruby color in addition to notes of dried herbs, raspberries, cherries, and dusty, sweaty saddle leather. Although not as deep, complete, or potentially profound, it is an intriguing wine to drink over the next 5-6 years. This artisinal winery produces what must be the most idiosyncratic/eccentric wines of Australia. They can be absolutely spectacular, or they can be distressingly irregular, one never knows which until the cork is pulled. I suspect if the late recluse of Chateauneuf du Pape, Jacques Reynaud, were reincarnated in Australia, he might be making the wines at this backwater address.

The fortified vintage port look-alike 2000 Potsorts, is a terrific, full-bodied, unctuously textured, rich, opulent, spicy effort revealing notions of camphor, charcoal, black fruits, figs, and licorice. The only question is ... will it age as well as a great vintage port?
